The positive and negative impacts on people from the Pharmaceutical Industry.
Positive
The pharmaceutical industry can help people overcome illness and disease. It can also save people’s lives. Certain pharmaceuticals can help with pain, headaches, cold and flu, Runny noses, Allergies and more. Constant testing and research provide scientists opportunities to find a cure for certain diseases and illnesses. These are all positive things.
Some of the money that pharmaceutical companies make is often used to fund many medical studies for research in to finding cures for diseases such as Cancers, Heart disease, HIV and many more. This is a good thing and can help to cure some diseases.
When creating drugs the pharmaceutical industry often has to use animals to test the drugs on. They do this to make sure the drugs are safe for people to use. In some countries it is also the law that drugs be tested on animals before people. They do this to make sure they can sell the medicines to people so they can make money. They test the drug on animals because they are better test subjects because they only live for a short time. It is in some ways a good thing that they test their drugs on animals not people because it means the drugs can be safer for people to use and there is less chance of people dying when they use the drugs. This raises a question of is it ok to sacrifice a number animals in a laboratory, to develop a drug that can improve, or save the life of a human.
Since the pharmaceutical industry first started in the mid 1800s there have been many many people saved by the drugs they manufacture. Diseases such as polio, whooping cough and small pox are almost non existent in western society today mainly because of the pharmaceutical industry.
The reason why people in the community support the Pharmaceutical industry is because it is considered vital to improve human health.
Although there are a lot of positives about the pharmaceutical industry and its impact on humans there are also a few negatives
Negatives
The Pharmaceutical industry is very expensive to run when alternative methods may be much cheaper. The wasted money could be used for better purposes that we need but this is a economic decision that the Pharmaceutical Industry has made and it is up to them.
Another Economic decision is that the Pharmaceutical Industry prices the medications at prices so that no other company can manufacture their compounds. The companies do not allow other companies to make generic (cheaper) brands of medicine until about 10 years after it was first created. This means that many people cannot afford to buy medicines. This can have a negative impact on their health.
When the pharmaceutical industry develops a new drug, it may pass all of the safety tests and it is all good on animals but sometimes when they go and give it to humans it still isn't safe for them.
There is also a problem the other way around, because some of the stuff that was harmful and didn't pass safety tests on animals but would help humans heaps, cannot be used on humans because it hasn't passed the safety tests. .
Once a prescription drug is ready to sell the pharmaceutical industry asks for millions of dollars. Some people think this is very bad and greedy but actually the money goes towards more drugs getting made.
The pharmaceutical industry chooses to sell the drugs for millions of dollars to get money so they can make more drugs. that is their economic decision. They also can get greedy, wanting to make more and more money, so they put the prices of the drugs up and still more people cannot afford them.
